Synaptics Brings Facial Recognition to Natural ID Line Via Multi-Factor Fusion Engine

Synaptics has announced a new multi-factor biometric solution that brings facial recognition to its Natural ID fingerprint authentication offering.

The company calls it a “multi-factor fusion engine”, and says it’s designed for integration into smartphones, tablets, and PCs. It allows users to choose whichever biometric authentication modality they prefer, or whichever is most convenient, and it can combine the two for particularly security-sensitive scenarios such as large financial transactions.

The system’s facial recognition capability comes equipped with liveness detection, checking for users’ head movements and eye blinks, allowing for even greater biometric security. The technology comes via a partnership with KeyLemon, a company with some experience in face-based biometrics.

In a statement announcing the new solution, Synaptics Marketing VP Anthony Gioeli said its use of fingerprint and facial biometrics merely represents ‘phase one’ of the project, with more biometrics options to follow in future iterations. It’s a promise that underscores the kind of ambition the company showed at the end of last year when it announced its new line of under-glass optical fingerprint sensors.
