NEXT Biometrics has received a follow-up order from its new US client, for which it will ship 5000 fingerprint sensors. The company says it’s part of a multi-year commitment that should ultimately see about 100,000 sensors shipped.
The company first announced its new client at the start of this month with an order valued at 820,000 NOK. At the time, NEXT Biometrics disclosed few details, but it has now revealed that the order was for its NB-3010-U, dubbed “The Oyster”. It’s a USB fingerprint sensor designed to be compatible with Window 7, Windows 8.1, and Microsoft’s Windows Biometric Framework more generally. Promoted as a low-cost proof-of-concept solution for e-commerce, file encryption, tablets, and many other applications, the solution could be appropriate for devices designed to be compatible with Microsoft’s new Windows 10 operating system, which places a heavy emphasis on security.
We can only guess for now while we await further details from NEXT. In a statement, NEXT Biometrics CEO Tore Etholm-Idsøe commented that the recent “orders from top tier clients in the U.S. reflect the market’s growing acceptance of NEXT technology resulting in excellent fingerprint sensor devices at a fraction of the price competitors would charge.”
