A new mobile biometric authentication solution has arrived in South Korea, reports The Korea Herald.
Called BioCA, it’s based primarily on facial recognition, using a smartphone’s camera to apply the biometric modality, but can also incorporate voice and fingerprint recognition. It’s the product of a collaboration between the Korea Smart Authentication Corp. (KoSAC) and Daon, which teamed up earlier this year, as well as the Korea Trade Network (KTNET) and the Korea International Trade Association.
The core biometric technology comes by way of Daon via its IdentityX platform, which has been used in other major mobile deployments from credit union USAA and global financial services giant Mastercard. But it’s a solution specialized for the Korean market, since the biometric data will be processed on KTNET’s cloud service, sparing the need for companies adopting the system to set up their own server systems.
While BioCA appears to be aimed primarily at the financial services sector, The Korea Herald reports that KTNET is also highlighting its potential applications in areas like access control and airport security screening.
