Norwegian biometrics developer IDEX ASA has found a manufacturer for mass-scale production of its fingerprint sensors. According to a press release, semiconductor producer Amkor will use its “world-class high precision manufacturing capabilities” to manufacture the sensors.
The move will enable “competitive commercialization of IDEX’s fingerprint sensor technology”, allowing it to better serve customer on an international scale. It is certainly a wise move on IDEX’s part, and may be a sign of a certain level of business maturity for the company, mass production indicating both a confidence in consumer demand and foresight with respect to reducing production costs, as seen elsewhere this week in Samsung’s move to step up mobile device production.
It’s also not at all a surprise to see this kind of large-scale industrial activity for a developer of fingerprint sensors, given their growing ubiquity in mobile devices and a general boom in the biometrics market.
