Alberta Launches Canada’s First Mobile Health Card Through Alberta Wallet

Alberta has become the first Canadian province to launch a mobile health card, introducing the new credential through its Alberta Wallet app at the end of last week. The platform allows residents to securely store and present their government-issued health cards on smartphones, offering a digital alternative to the province’s long-standing paper cards.

How the Mobile Health Card Works

The Alberta Wallet app provides a digital version of the provincial health card that is accepted at hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities. The card displays a resident’s name, date of birth, and personal health number through a secure QR code. Screenshots or printouts are not valid – verification requires the live QR code displayed in the app.

Eligibility begins at age 14. Residents must hold a verified Alberta.ca account and be enrolled in MyHealth Records to activate the wallet. Parents and guardians can add mobile health cards for children, while spouses and interdependent partners can share cards within households. The system is available through iOS (16 or later), Android (9 or later), and web browser access, with internet connectivity required for setup.

According to the provincial fact sheet, the Alberta Wallet uses advanced encryption and complies with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Health Information Act. The province says these safeguards ensure personal health data is kept secure.

Transition and Future Plans

Paper health cards remain valid and widely accepted, but officials note that the mobile option eliminates issues with damaged or worn plastic. The government intends to add more credentials to Alberta Wallet over time, making it a central hub for digital documents.

A new combined plastic driver’s license and health card is also planned for 2026, providing residents with a more durable physical option alongside the mobile platform. This addition is part of Alberta’s broader digital transformation strategy, which aims to streamline public services and give residents multiple ways to access their records.

The introduction of Alberta Wallet reflects a wider movement toward digital credentials in Canada, following initiatives such as the MyCreds platform for skilled trades. By rolling out the country’s first mobile health card, Alberta is positioning itself at the forefront of digital identity adoption in healthcare.
