Aegon Rolls Out Facial Recognition to Streamline Customer Verification

Aegon, a Dutch life insurance and asset management company, has implemented new biometric authentication technology to strengthen its customer verification process. The enhancement introduces facial recognition and other biometric tools as alternatives to traditional document-based identity checks, marking a notable improvement in both security and user experience across its digital platform.

Faster, Paperless Verification with Biometric Fallback

During initial trials, the system showed improved pass rates for electronic anti-money laundering (AML) and bank verification checks. Aegon has also introduced a fallback mechanism that enables users to complete verification through biometric methods when electronic checks are unsuccessful, removing the need to submit physical documentation. This approach helps minimize onboarding delays while maintaining compliance with financial regulations.

“We recognise the need to balance security with convenience and innovation on our adviser platform,” said Stephen Crosbie, Head of Retail at Aegon. “This upgrades our defences against modern digital threats while making the verification process smoother for advisers and clients.”

Strategic Alignment and Digital Service Expansion

The move reflects Aegon’s broader digital transformation strategy, outlined during its June 2024 Strategy Teach-In, which emphasized process automation and simplification. Enhancing the adviser platform has been a central priority for the company as it seeks to modernize operations and reduce friction for both clients and intermediaries.

For customers, the new biometric tools offer several benefits: faster verification times, higher security standards, and a fully paperless process. These enhancements are intended to improve user satisfaction while supporting the company’s compliance and fraud prevention objectives.

The financial services industry is undergoing rapid digital change, with increasing demand for seamless online interactions. Aegon’s adoption of biometric verification aligns with this trend, helping the company meet evolving customer expectations while reinforcing its security infrastructure.

According to company officials, the new system lays the groundwork for future improvements to Aegon’s digital service offerings. It also supports the company’s long-term goal of becoming a market leader in digital retirement and investment services by delivering secure, user-friendly experiences at scale.
